What is EAB?

What is the Emerald Ash Borer? The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an invasive Asian beetle that attacks ash trees native to North America. In Minnesota, the adult beetle flies during the months of May through August and feeds on leaves of the ash. While this does little harm to the trees, it is the larvae of the emerald ash borer that is most damaging. The larvae eventually kill the ash by eating the tree's thin layer of living tissue called the cambium.
Affected by Emerald Ash Borer
It is important to remember that emerald ash borer only affects native ash trees that are in the genus Fraxinus or true ash, in Minnesota that will include:
Black Ash - Fraxinus nigra
White Ash - Fraxinus americana
Green Ash - Fraxinus pennsylvanica
Blue Ash - Fraxinus quadrangulata
Not Affected by Emerald Ash Borer
Mountain Ash is a common tree or shrub planted in Minnesota and is not a true ash and therefore is not affected by the emerald ash borer. Also not affected is wafer-ash, which is not a true ash. - Note the genus Sorbus and Ptelea are not considered true ash
Mancana Ash, which is a true ash, has been reported by the department of entomology from Ohio State University as being resistant to EAB.
American Mountain Ash - Sorbus americana
European Mountain Ash - Sorbus aucuparia
Wafer-ash - Ptelea trifoliata
Macana ash - Fraxinus mandshurica
